Netivot HaTorah...Our Committment

 Avrom Silver ז"ל

Toronto businessman and philanthropist Avrom Silver ז"ל played an integral role in the creation of Netivot HaTorah Day School. Beginning in 1989, he co-chaired the fundraising campaign to build the Jack & Anne Weinbaum Education Centre in Thornhill. He also served on the Board and Executive of the school from 1988 to 1996.

A modest, generous man, he whole-heartedly identified with, and believed in, the need in our community for a school like Netivot HaTorah, rooted in the principles of modern-orthodox Judaism, Zionism and excellence in secular studies.

Driven by his enthusiasm, Avrom Silver generously led by example, successfully securing contributions from many new donors to the capital campaign.

His untimely death in 1997 was a devastating loss for his young family and created a deep void in our school and the wider Jewish community.

We at Netivot HaTorah will forever be grateful for his outstanding devotion to our school. His efforts and accomplishments laid the foundation for what Netivot HaTorah has become today. We remain deeply indebted to Bonny Silver and her children for continuing Avrom Silver’s legacy of generosity and support.

Shauna Tepperman

President 1984 - 1989

"Our vision for Netivot was to provide our children and our friends’ children with an understanding of Torah and a commitment to halacha, a love of Israel and her people and a passion for study.  Once people entrusted their children to Netivot, we felt completely responsible to deliver our promise.”

Allan Rutman

President 1989 - 1992

“I became involved because I identified with the school’s hashkafa.  It is the only Toronto school that appeals to both Torah u’maada and Modern Orthodox values.”

Moishe Kesten

President 1992 - 1995

“My participation in the early years of Netivot was undoubtedly the most rewarding. I felt part of building the culture of the institution – a culture, I’m pleased to say, that continues to educate in a way that is true to its philosophy with a focus on excellence.”

Elaine Fink

President 1995 - 1998

“It was a fairly new school and there were many volunteer opportunities. Netivot was a school that I could easily relate to in terms of its philosophy.”

David Koschitzky

President 1998 - 2000

“Netivot is the school which instilled in my children their foundation to become Zionistic observant Jews.  Thanks, in large part to the school, my children appreciate and participate in everything life has to offer, but in a manner consistent with the Torah.”

Naftali Winter

President 2000 - 2002

“Netivot reflects our hashkafa and educational values. It proudly and successfully stands for religious Zionism, excellence in Jewish and secular education and instills these values in our children.”

Greta Reiss

President 2002 - 2004

“Netivot represents the very best this city has to offer in the way of both their secular and religious education. Netivot has managed to find the balance between the middot of halacha with the maada of the secular world.”

Jeff Shumacher

President 2004 - 2006

“With the success of Netivot, modern religious Zionism has a future in Toronto. Families with these values will feel like they belong to a greater group of Jews and can feel proud of this way of life.”

Stuart Lewis

President 2006 - 2008

“Netivot HaTorah provided our family with a foundation of yiddishkite and Torah observance. It gave our family a much-welcomed nurturing environment in which to learn and grow into a tzioni daati community.”
